First, the Republican party was created to end slavery. Once the 13th amendment was passed and the civil war ended, they started to change their values. As things like Jim Crow Laws and racial discrimination became very prominent in the South, the Republicans did not make much effort to help the blacks. They started to put their focus on imperialism and capitalism.
