The answer is D. Douglass describes his fight with such detail because deciding to fight back against Covey’s beatings is a turning point for Douglass that leads him to resolve to escape from slavery.

EXPLANATION

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is a memoir and treatise that is written by a former slave and famous orator, Frederick Douglass. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is written in 1845, while he was in Lynn, Massachusetts. It is one of the most famous narratives at that time, that is written by former slaves. The memoir tells about events in Douglass’ life and is considered as the most influential pieces in the literature. The memoir triggered the movement of the abolitionist of the early 19th century.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass consists of eleven chapters that tell about Douglass’ life as a slave and also his ambition on becoming a free man. The memoir contains two introductions that are written by well-known while abolitionists: a letter by Wendell Phillips and a preface by William Lloyd Garrison. Both of the introductions are arguing about the literacy of its author and the veracity of the account.

The publishing of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass was on May 1, 1845. Within only four months of the publication, there were five thousand copies of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass sold. Douglass then gained $710.96 from his supporters to free him from his legal owner.

I’d say:
I had a hard time deciding whether to write an essay about the works of “Eudora Welty, Joan Didion, Gwendolyn Brooks” because the rest of the punctuations doesn’t make sense.

But actually it should be:

I had a hard time deciding whether to write an essay about the works of Eudora Welty, Joan Didion, and Gwendolyn Brooks.
(Without the quotation marks and inclusion the word “and” before “Gwendolyn”)
