A colon cancer screening study is being conducted in Nottingham, England. Individuals 50 to 75 years old will be screened with t

he Hemoccult test. In this test, a stool sample is tested for the presence of blood. The Hemoccult test has a sensitivity of 70% and a specificity of 75%. If Nottingham has a prevalence of 12/1000 for colon caner, what is the positive predictive value of the test?

Answer:

The correct answer is 3.3 %.

Explanation:

Based on the given information, the specificity of the test is 75 percent, the sensitivity of the test is 70 percent and the prevalence of the disease is 12/1000 or 1.2 percent.

As 1.2 percent is the prevalence of the disease, therefore, it shows that of the 1000 individuals the infected individuals would be 12. The 70 percent sensitivity of the test shows that of the 12 affected individuals, 8.4 individuals are determined as positive, that is, 12*70/100.

The remaining 988 of 1000 individuals are not affected by the condition. With 75 percent specificity, the test determines 75 % of 988 individuals, that is, 741 as negative for the test, thus, the left 247 are considered positive. When taken together the outcome of the sensitivity and specificity, the total of 255.4 persons, that is, 247+8.4, are determined as positive. Of these positives, the false positive, that is, 247 holds for 96.7 percent of the total positive individuals.

The PPV or the positive predictive value can be calculated by using the formula:

PPV = Number of persons who are true positive for the disease/Total number of persons who are diagnosed to be positive * 100

= 8.4/255.4 * 100

= 3.3%

Changing a river into a lake is basically what a large dam does. One reason we do this to create reservoirs of fresh water. Howe
rjkz [21]
One negative impact of building a dam could be that it affects natural habitats of animals who live in and around the river. When you build a dam, the river's height becomes smaller because a huge amount of water becomes technically removed or blocked. This can affect animals such as fish or beavers or anyone who needs that water.

Svetach [21]

Answer:

Animals that form part of the tree of life

Explanation:

The tree of life is a diagram used in evolutionary biology to organize life into categories and to classify different species. In this case, tuna, turtles, and chimpanzees and humans are species that can be grouped in the animal category, within the vertebrates group (chordate phylum), being it the most inclusive level at which all these species belong.

correct descriptions sense changes in chemical composition sense pain sense stretching, pressure or vibrations senses light
Shtirlitz [24]

Extremes in temperature, pressure, and chemicals associated with injury are detected by specialized peripheral sensory neurons known as nociceptors, who then translate these stimuli into long-range electrical signals that are transmitted to higher brain centers. This alerts us to potentially harmful stimuli at the skin. A wide range of pain characteristics are produced by the activation of functionally different cutaneous nociceptor populations and the processing of the information they relay. Current research in this area is giving scientists a deeper understanding of the molecular and systems levels of nociceptor cell biology as well as knowledge that will enable the focused design of innovative pain treatments.

What is Chemical composition sense ?

Chemical senses (sometimes called chemical sensors) are sensory organs and neurological systems that are used to detect molecules in the environment or biological signals and to process those molecules neurally

Over a period of time, the beetles once again reached carrying capacity and sustained it for many years. However, pollution from
Nookie1986 [14]

Answer:

As the beetles have a uniform distribution, at a carrying capacity of 14,600 beetles, there are about 128 beetles per hectare. Because 55 hectares are now unlivable, the carrying capacity would decrease by about 7,040 individuals (55 × 128).

Therefore, the carrying capacity of the ecosystem will be (old carrying capacity – decrease in carrying capacity) = (14,600 – 7,040) = 7,560 beetles.
