Miss Lottie’s house was the most ramshackle of all our ramshackle homes. The sun and rain had long since faded its rickety frame

siding from white to a sullen gray. The boards themselves seemed to remain upright not from being nailed together but rather from leaning together, like a house that a child might have constructed from cards. A brisk wind might have blown it down, and the fact that it was still standing implied a kind of enchantment that was stronger than the elements. There it stood and as far as I know is standing yet—a gray, rotting thing with no porch, no shutters, no steps, set on a cramped lot with no grass, not even any weeds—a monument to decay. What can BEST be inferred about Miss Lottie based on the description above?
A)Miss Lottie was a loner with no family.
B)Miss Lottie wished she could afford a better home.
C)Miss Lottie was one of the poorest people in the neighborhood.
D)Miss Lottie was an outcast who did not take care of her home

Answer:

I believe the best answer to be letter C) Miss Lottie was one of the poorest people in the neighborhood.

Explanation:

The excerpt was taken from the short story "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier. The story takes place during the Great Depression that affected the US. Miss Lottie is one of the characters, an old lady who has a mentally challenged son and a beautiful garden full of marigolds.

Even if one hasn't read the short story, from the excerpt it is possible to tell Miss Lottie is very likely a poor woman. The description of her house reminds us of run-down neighborhoods where people struggle financially and are unable to improve their homes. Not a clue is given about her being an outcast, about her wishes, or about her being lonely. The description only makes it clear that her house is in a disgraceful state, which we could logically assume is due to her lack of money. Taking further conclusions than that would be just guessing in the face of the information given.

Read the excerpts from " The Royal House of Thebes " and " The Story of a Warrior Queen ."
Yuliya22 [10]

Answer:

The tragic heroine.

Explanation:

The tragic heroine archetype is the female protagonist who possesses a fatal flaw and makes wrongful judgments that led to her downfall, and even that of others around her.

The two excerpts from "The Royal House of Thebes" and "The Story of a Warrior Queen" show the tragic heroine in the characters of Antigone and Boadicea. Here, both women are shown them acting in their best interests but at the same time, also resulted in the death or suffering of their near ones. Boadicea takes her life and also that of her daughters while Antigone's act of going against the king to bury her brother led to the suffering of her sister Ismene too.

Thus, the correct answer is the tragic heroine.

What kind of motivation do the narrator's thoughts show?
frosja888 [35]

This question is incomplete because it is missing the passage. I've found the complete question online. It is as follows:

Read the passage from "Two Kinds.”

And then I saw what seemed to be the prodigy side of me—because I had never seen that face before. I looked at my reflection, blinking so I could see more clearly. The girl staring back at me was angry, powerful. This girl and I were the same. I had new thoughts, willful thoughts, or rather thoughts filled with lots of won'ts. I won't let her change me, I promised myself. I won't be what I'm not.

What kind of motivation do the narrator’s thoughts show?

A. Extrinsic motivation: The narrator wants to become a prodigy to please her mother.

B. Extrinsic motivation: The narrator wants to adapt her behavior to please the girl in the mirror.

C. Intrinsic motivation: The narrator refuses to be angry like the girl in the mirror.

D. Intrinsic motivation: The narrator refuses to change her true nature to please someone else.

Answer:

The correct answer is D. Intrinsic motivation: The narrator refuses to change her true nature to please someone else.

Explanation:

"Two Kinds" is a short story by Amy Tan. The main character, June, is under pressure from her Chinese mother to become a child prodigy. In the passage, we see that June is determined not to let her mother change her. She is actually determined to be average, mediocre. Her motivation is intrinsic, which means it comes from within herself, not from the world outside. She does not want to change who she truly is, her true nature, just to please her mother.

Which task is a part of narrowing down a subject for a paper? creating a plan for writing the paper deciding on the scope of the
Ivanshal [37]

The correct answer is B) deciding on the scope of the topic.

The task that is part of narrowing down a subject paper is deciding on the scope of the topic.

It is very important for the writer to know the extension and the variables of the topic it is going to write about. Knowing the scope of the topic means that the writer limits the information to what is necessary and important for the reader to know. This way the writer will know what data or information to include that is important for the comprehension of the topic and what is not. This is the way to ensure that the information is clear, specific and to the point.
