Let's call the number of blue and black pens, respectively, b and k. We know that there are 29 pens in total, and no other colors. This means that

b+k = 29

i.e. the number of blue and black pens, together, must add up to 29.

Now, we also know that there are 3 more blue than black, which in other words means that the number of blue exceeds the number of black by 3:

b = k+3

We can use this expression to substitute b in the first equation:

b + k = (k+3) + k = 2k+3 = 29 \iff 2k = 26 iff k = 13

So, there are 13 black pens. Since the blue are three more than the black, Suzie has 16 blue pens.

Hello!

Let's put this a system of equations, with y being the blue pens and x being the black.

y=x+3

x+y=29

Let's plug in our value for y into the second equation and solve for x.

x+x+3=29

2x+3=29

Let's subtract 3 from both sides.

2x=26

We divide both sides by 2

x=13

Now we add 3 to find the blue pens.

y=16

Therefore, Suzie has 16 blue pens.

I hope this helps!

With the form f(x+a) the vertex of the parabola will be shifted to left with a>0 and to the right with a<0. The larger the magnitude of a the more shift. So we can simply sort by the value a in descending order:

f(x+3)-->f(x+2)-->f(x)-->f(x-1/2)-->f(x-4)-->f(x-7)

Hi! So, the correct equation for finding out the starting number for Brooke’s candy bars would be
c-(1/2)c-2=3
Because c is the number of candy bars total, you would subtract the ones she gave to her friends (1/2 of the number of candy bars and 2)
Then, you would solve that equation which would look like this:
c-(1/2)c-2=3
c-(1/2)c=5
1/2c=5
c=10
So she started with 10 candy bars
To prove that: 10-5-2=3
