Utopian societies were a reaction to industrialization and general reform movements in the early to mid-1800's.

The Utopian societies created in America were an attempt to try new ways of living. The Shakers lived in a society with celibacy and gender equality. The Oneida was a socialist community in which all things were shared from economic resources to family members. The Mormons were created during this period as well. The community believed in the message of Joseph Smith and had to move many times until reaching Utah.
