Answer: 32

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x  be the number of dimes and y be the number of quarters Janet has.

We know that 1 dime = $0.1

1 quarter = $0.25

Given : Janet has a jar of 54 coins consisting of dimes and quarters.

i.e. x+y=54------(1)

She has a total of $8.70.

i.e. 0.1x+0.25y=8.70------------(2)

Multiply equation (2) by 10 we get

x+2.5y=87------------(3)

Eliminate equation (1) from (3), we get

1.5y=33\\\\\Rightarrow\ y=\dfrac{33}{1.5}=22

Put value of y=22 in (1), we get

x+22=54\\\\\Rightarrow\ x=54-22=32

Hence, she has 32 dimes.

A) At x = 4 and y = 2

Step-by-step explanation:

When you have something like (4,2), as shown above, the first number in parenthesis is x while the second number is y.
