Anthony refers to Webster, Worcester, and Bouvier defining a citizen as a person entitled to vote and hold office, in order to then persuade her audience with the question quoted above.

In her attempt to anticipate selective exposure, she states a question that can only lead to a single conclusion, because there is no doubt that a woman is a person, and therefore should be considered as entitled to vote and hold office.
