The over-all impact of Watergate is seen as having a cleansing impact on the nation's political process. Former Lawyer Common Elliot Richardson puts it this way: "Watergate has made one critical commitment, at slightest to the degree that there are numerous officeholders who are getting to be persuaded that genuine legislative issues – open, artless legislative issues – is the leading legislative issues."
