Read the excerpt from "The Lottery." The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; t

he flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 26th, but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took only about two hours, so it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner. Based on the setting details in this excerpt, the reader is led to believe that the square in the village is a historical landmark that is guarded daily. the villagers are hungry and in a hurry to get home for their lunch. the June 27th date is an important tradition that occurs in summer. the lottery is shorter now that population of the village has decreased.

Answer:

C. The June 27th date is an important tradition that occurs in summer

Explanation:

"The Lottery" is a short story by Shirley Jackson which tells the story of the annual tradition of stoning a drawn person, which is believed necessary foor a good harvest that year. The ritual is held every year on June 27th and this excerpt establishes the importance of that date by showing people of the village gathering in the square.

Furthermore, in some bigger villages, the lottery starts the day before in order for the final draw to be held on June 27th emphasizing the significance of that date and importance of the ritual taking place exactly on that day.

Refer to the Newsela article "Alas, Shakespeare Won't Be Taught in This Class."
STatiana [176]

Answer: to provide an example of one teacher's efforts to make Shakespeare more relatable to students.

Explanation:

The aforementioned article is based on the opinion of a high school teacher named Dana Dusbiber in Sacramento who does not believe that teaching Shakespeare in this day and age is still relevant due to the world increasingly accepting other cultures.

The author then wrote this section in the article to show the exam of Christine Baker who is also a Sacramento High School teacher who holds the belief that Shakespeare might be old-fashioned, but it shouldn't be scrapped. It should be modernized because the lessons still apply to the present period.
