Because of the case of Ogden v Gibbon, Ogden wanted Gibbon to stop using his steamboats. Ogden thought that Gibbon was a competitor, his wished was granted by the court and Gibbon was asked to stop. However, Gibbon made an appeal that his permission to ran his steamboat was from the US Congress and that his business was more into an interstate commerce between New Jersey and New York, which was allowable in the Constitution.
