Cyanobacteria or blue-green algae are photosynthetic prokaryotes that inhabit a wide range of habitats. They are found as free-floating plankton in marine and freshwater environments or attached to rock surfaces as mats and periphyton (biofilm).
Cyanobacteria can either be unicellular or filamentous. They are resilient microorganisms that can inhabit the most harsh environments on Earth. Apart from the aforementioned habitats, cyanobacteria are also found in hot springs, desert soil and saline lakes.
