Georgia became a colony through <em>James Edward Oglethorpe</em>, a benevolent philanthropist. He named the new colony "Georgia" in honor of <em>King George II. </em>The main purpose of this colony was to act as a <em>"defensive buffer"</em> against the many enemies surrounding South Carolina.

Georgia's land then became cleared for the first settlers. When Oglethorpe arrived there, he immediately negotiated with the "Indian Tribes." Majority of the colony's trade partner comes from the<u> "Upper Creek" tribe.</u> They became Georgia's primary trading partners and the strategy also prevented them from being attacked by the native people.
