Georgia became a colony through <em>James Edward Oglethorpe</em>, a benevolent philanthropist. He named the new colony "Georgia" in honor of <em>King George II. </em>The main purpose of this colony was to act as a <em>"defensive buffer"</em> against the many enemies surrounding South Carolina.

Georgia's land then became cleared for the first settlers. When Oglethorpe arrived there, he immediately negotiated with the "Indian Tribes."
