In the Southern colonies slaves had hard lives for the longest time. Plantations were very common in the South as the best way to make money was for farmers to sell cotton to the British directly. The Southern climate was perfect for this, along with tobacco. As the North slowly realized that slavery was wrong and the Southern colonies split off from the North, slavery was still very popular during and before the civil war in the South.
