During his presidency, Andrew Jackson had as a goal to pay off the national debt. He believed that debt was a threat of liberty and because of that, he enforced the shrinking of the debt by being frugal with federal funds. Jackson believed that the federal government had the power to levy and enforce tariffs and believed that the revenues that they generated would raise money to pay off the national debt. This resulted in the Nullification Crisis later.
