First, we could try to factorize the polynomial. We could group the first and third terms, and the second and fourth term:

\displaystyle{ (3x^4-27x^2)-(x^3-9x)=3x^2(x^2-9)-x(x^2-9)

Now, x(x^2-9) is a common factor:

\displaystyle{ x(3x-1)(x^2-9).

By the difference of squares formula, our final factorization is :

x(3x-1)(x-3)(x+3).

Here we can see clearly that the roots of f(x) are 0, 1/3, 3, and -3.

Remark: we grouped the terms in pairs as we did, noticing that the ratio of the exponents, and coefficient in each pair was the same.

Answer: 0, 1/3, 3, and -3.

Using six random samples, the average number of catfish in the samples was 5.7. If the total population of fish in the pond is 2
zheka24 [161]
Using the proportion given, there will be 57 catfish in the pond.

The proportion given to us is
5.7/20 = x/200

Cross multiply:
5.7*200 = 20*x
1140 = 20x

Divide both sides by 20:
1140/20 = 20x/20
57 = x

What is the equation of the line that passes through the point (6, 3) and has a slope of -2?
tekilochka [14]

We know the equation of a line is y=mx+b. We know the slope (m) is -2 and all we need is the intercept (b).

Since we know one point, we can plug in 6 for x and 3 for y (along with -2 for m) in our equation and then solve for b.

3= -2*6 + b

3= -12 + b

15 = b

Since we now know the intercept we can now write our equation:

y= -2x + 15

What two numbers' sum=-4 and product=-2
n200080 [17]

Let a and b be the two numbers. Then

a + b = -4

a b = -2

Solve the second equation for b :

b = -2/a

Substitute this into the first equation:

a - 2/a = -4

Multiply both sides by a :

a² - 2 = -4a

Move 4a to the left side:

a² + 4a - 2 = 0

Use the quadratic formula to solve for a :

a = (-4 ± √(4² - 4(-2))) / 2

a = -2 ± √6

If a = -2 + √6, then

-2 + √6 + b = -4

b = -2 - √6

In the other case, we end up with the same numbers, but a and b are swapped.
