Explain the irony of the gift the Cyclops says he will give to Odysseus?

The irony is because odysseyus doesnt wanna die so he tries to say he will give a fift and then he stabs cyclops in the eye

The Irony is that even though Odysseus doesn't want to die and thinks the gift will help him, the gift is only grants him to be eaten last by the Cyclops.
