John Smith is mostly associated with being the first colonial leader to settle the first permanent English settlement in America.  He helped set up the colony of Jamestown in present day Virginia.

The president Roosevelt used this tactic as a way to secure Panama's independence from Colombia; in a way of exchange the United States was able to secure access to what would become the Panama Canal.

The League of Nations was established after WW1 to keep peace. There is currently a “United Nations” there goal is to promote peace and prevent war through diplomacy, just as the League of Nations.
