When the respiratory diaphragm contracts, it flattens, lowering the floor of the thoracic cavity. At the same time, the intercos

tal muscles pull the ribs up and out. The active forces of the muscle groups cause a(n) __________ (increase/decrease) in thoracic volume. Given the relationship between pressure and volume, this would cause pressure within the lungs to __________ (increase/decrease)

Answer:

1. Increase

2.  Decrease

Explanation:

During inspiration, diaphragm contracts and lowers down. There is a simultaneous contraction of external intercostal muscles and movement of rib-cage upward and outward. All these events lead to an increase in the volume of the thoracic cavity. Increase in volume of the thoracic cavity results in expansion of lungs and lowering down the air pressure within alveoli of lungs.

which guideline is recommended for determining suction catheter depth when suctioning an endotracheal tube?
Fudgin [204]

The recommended guideline for determining suction catheter depth when suctioning an endotracheal tube is;

By using a suction catheter with centimeter increments on it.

Insert the suction catheter into the endotracheal tube until the centimeter markings on both the endotracheal tube and catheter align

Insert the suction catheter no further than an additional 1 cm.

       From documented guidelines to determine suction catheter depth, they are;

1) Get a suction catheter with centimeter increments on it.

2) Then you will Insert the suction catheter into the endotracheal tube till the centimeter markings located on both the endotracheal tube and catheter align

3) Next is to insert the suction catheter not more than an extra 1 cm.

4) The length of the endotracheal tube should be combined with any other adapter you are using after which you add an additional 1 cm.

5) Get a spare endotracheal tube that has same size as that being used for the patient.

6) Insert the suction catheter to the end of this tube and take note of the length at which the catheter got to the end of the tube.

7) If you are dealing with a closed system, then all you need to do is to combine the endotracheal tube length and length of additional adapters you are using and add an extra 1 cm.

Which of the following is not a component of the respiratory membrane?
Burka [1]

Answer:

D. Type II alveolar cells

Explanation:

Three layers together make the diffusion membrane or respiratory membrane, which make the total thickness of less than a millimeter i.e. about 0.2 micrometer. The three layers are as follows:

1. The squamous epithelium of alveoli. There are two types of alveolar cells called type I and type II. Type I makes the exchange surface of alveolar membrane and type II cells are responsible for secreting the lung surfactant that reduces the surface tension.

2. Endothelial lining of blood capillaries. These is rich network of blood capillaries near the wall of alveoli.

3. In between the squamous epithelium and the endothelium of blood capillaries fused basement membrane is present.

Answer:

a. individuals with type AB blood can only receive a transfusion of type AB blood

Explanation:

Type AB blood can receive transfusion from all the other blood types (A, B, AB and O). This is why, it is considered to be the universal recipient. Thus, this makes choice a false.

On the contrary, the universal donor among the blood types is type O blood. This means that a person with this type of blood can donate to all types of blood because it is compatible. However, it can only receive transfusion from the same blood type O.
