These indulgences essentially forgave an individual for a sin they committed. Martin Luther felt that this was a corrupt practice and that wealthy individuals in society could do whatever they want, knowing later they could buy an indulgence in order to obtain forgiveness.

His ninety-five theses discusses the sale of indulgences, their immorality, and their harmful effects in 6 different theses.
