"Everyday Use" is a short story about a black woman who lives in the southern United States with her daughters. The story portrays all the difficulties, prejudices and thoughts that a black family has to go through.

One of this woman's daughters is named Dee, who is a woman trying to connect with her cultural heritage. At one point in her history she becomes interested in churn top and quilts, and at another point in her life, she totally rejected it.  The ironic thing about this is that this interest only came when Dee no longer had access to churn top and quilts.
