There are several theories and studies concerning motivation. One thing most studies - if not all of them - seem to agree about is the fact that intrinsic motivation is more powerful than extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation, as the name suggests, is motivation that comes from within, from internal rewards instead of external ones. For instance, a person who works for the sake of making money is extrinsically motivated. On the other hand, a person who works because she enjoys doing that work is intrinsically motivated. Notice that the sentence "Dance like no one's watching, work like you don't need the money, and love like you've never been hurt" is urging people to do things not for the sake of impressing someone, or getting rich, but simply for the sake of doing them.
