The travels of </span><span>Cabeza de Vaca was compared to the travels of Odysseus in the story, The Odyssey.

Cabeza de Vaca was a part of a large contingent that was sent to explore new territories. Just like Odysseus, the group of Cabeza de Vaca encountered a great storm that greatly diminished their numbers. Their group was attacked and they became slaves of the Native Indians. However, Cabeza de Vaca identified himself as a healer and performed rituals of healing that made the Native Indians believe that he is the real thing. He became well-respected and loved by the community that when they were set to continue their journey, the Native Indians tried to persuade him to stay and remain their shaman healer.
