The territory that Mexico cede to the United States as a result of the Mexican  are now know today as present day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Mexico lost 525,000 square miles of land to the U.S.

2. The Shatt al-Arab waterway was also another reason. The waterway caused much tension in the region because who controlled it had much influence in trade for the region.
