At this 2005 conference, Turkish intellectuals recognized the Armenian genocide, which Turkey had previously denied. The conference was important because Turkey wanted to strengthen its bonds with European nations so it could join the European Union. This conference would help them with that process. So, the conference was a political move to please Europe. However, socially, the conference inspired resistance from many nationalists who believed the conference was a “stab in the back” by the intellectuals who supported it. In 1915, an event known as the ArmenianGenocide(or Amernian Holocaust) took place. During it, Approximately 1.5 Million Armenians were systematically killed much like the Jewish Holocaust.
It is important that these events be recognized by turkey (formerly the ottoman empire) for the same reason that the Jewish Holocaust be recognized. The victims families must be compensated, recognized as victims, and so nothing like it can ever be allowed to happen again.
