Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in <em>1882</em> and was signed by President Chester A. Arthur. The Act was the result of anti-Chinese feelings in the Western states of the U.S. They were concerned that Chinese immigrants would affect wages because Chinese workers were paid so low. The Act denied the Chinese for naturalization and suspended immigration for ten years.  

The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was the first formal law that was created to limit immigration into the U. S.
