The United Nations imposed sanction on Iraq in 1990 and lasted until 2003 when Saddam Hussein was removed from power. The sanctions were a reaction to Iraq invasion of Kuwait and there purpose was to force the Iraqi forces to withdraw. Iraq was also expected to pay for the damage they caused. Besides all that the Iraq was to destroy and disclose any and all weapons of mass destruction they had in their possession.
