American Indians occupied Alcatraz Island in 1969 as a show of protest against the United States's constant choice to overlook or misrecognize rights and responsibilities set by treaties between tribes and the US government. In my view the period that has had the biggest impact on the development of US society is The Great Depression. That depression brought a huge economic growth but also changed mass culture that swept many Americans into consumer society.
