They moved into the urban areas so that they could be around other people that also spoke their language and had familiar customs. Being in an urban area also made it easier to find jobs in order to buy food and other necessary supplies.

It depends on where they came from, but they had trouble finding decent jobs because of discrimination, and there were diseases in the US that they were not accustomed to.
