According to Erikson, an individual will go through different stages known as the psychosocial stages. In each one, the individual will be presented with a dilemma; overcoming it helps him/her develop a strength, whilst failing to overcome it can create a crisis.

The fifth stage is known as identity vs. role confusion and it occurs during adolescence. This is the time in life in which the teenager begins to look for him/herself, trying to <em>figure out who he/she is</em>. A teenager tries to create his/her own path and become more independent, looking out for him/herself.

In this case, Jules could not focus much on finding himself since he was just trying to avoid abuse at home during his adolescence. Since he never formed an identity per se, he finds himself adrift in adulthood, not being able to form lasting bonds since he couldn't overcome the fifth stage.
