These were two of the main labour systems that the Europeans introduced to the Americas. In English colonies, the headright system tended to be used. This was a system in which labourers were brought from abroad. The labourers were usually poor Europeans who could not find work in Europe. These people came to America as indentured servants.

The encomienda system was the one used in Spanish America. Under this system, Europeans officers were granted land and American Indians, and the officers were "responsible" for both land and workers. Under this system, Christianization of the Indians was extremely important.
