Neurotransmitters are extremely important to our body and can act as messenger of inhibitory or excitatory signals to the postsynaptic neuron. They produce a hyperpolarization or a depolarization of its membrane, although the same molecule may inhibit or excite. This is because there are a number of neurotransmitters, but a wide variety of receptors on different cell types.
The main neurotransmitters that the human body has are: acetylcholine, dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GAMMA).
