Because he worked assiduously to look like something he was not, he wanted to have the image of a simple and humble farmer, but in reality his family was very wealthy. His greatest support was the rural community of Georgia to whom he spoke of values, of growing economy for the small farmer, segregation and low taxes, which won the majority of votes.
