The phrase has been taken from the speech given by Patrick Henry and the purpose of this was to fight for getting liberty and freedom from the rule.

<u>Explanation:</u>

The speech which was given by Patrick Henry and was named " Give me Liberty or give me death". When he said this, the purpose of this was to fight for freedom and liberty be the American people against the rule of British. He said either liberty and freedom should be given from the rule or death should be given to him.

There was a debate going on whether to send the troops for the revolutionary war to fight against the British rule. Then Patrick told them to do so because fighting for the independence was very important. He wanted liberty for his country men and for himself. He inspired people to fight for freedom.
