women were expected to behave quietly and stay in the house to take care of the children and husband. they were often treated this way because they were believed to be inferior to men and should be controlled by them. a piece of evidence from the law of manu states "in childhood a female must be subject to her father, in youth to her husband, when her lord is dead to her sons; a woman must never be independent".
