Apartheid began in South Africa, where they segregated people of different races. Under this policy, the rights of the majority of Africans was neglected and the Afrikaner (the white people living in South Africa) had control. Apartheid started after World War 2, and ended in 1991.

The policy of apartheid started in  South Africa , where whites could not mix together with the blacks (negroes). The negroes had to live separately in their own neighborhood and the children had to go to special schools , exclusively for blacks. They couldn't play with white children, go to the same cinemas or eat in the same snack-bar.Resuming this , they had to be totally apart from the blacks.
It finally ended when Nelson Mandella , a negro president, decided to establish equal rights for both races, permitting the blacks to have more freedom in their own country and giving them more liberty to participate in politics
