Literary realism is part of the realist art movement beginning with mid nineteenth-century French literature (Stendhal), and Russian literature (Alexander Pushkin) and extending to the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.Literary realism, in contrast to idealism, attempts to represent familiar things as they are. Juan de onate was an explorer and colonial governor recalled to Mexico city in 1606 for a hearing on his conduct. Resigning his post led to his trial and conviction of cruelty to colonists and natives. Exiled from Mexico for five years, he went to Spain where the king appointed him head of mining inspectors. He died there in 1626.
