Both of these things were extreamly important for neolithic groups who had just begun to rely on agriculture to survive. They believed that by praying or sacrificing to these gods thatthey would have a bountiful harvest. The amount of crops they grew was one of the main factors in whether they lived or died so it makes sense they would make their gods have these powers.
