A theme is the reoccurring idea of the topic which is underlined throughout the literary work. It can also be said to be the prevailing topic or the message which the author wants to convey to the readers through the write-up. Usually, themes are universal in approach. They are focused on the experiences of the humans which do not follow the cultural barriers.
The word "were" isn't a coordinating conjunction because it simply isn't able to connect two independent clauses and put them together to form a compound sentence.
