In the pre historic periods humans were present as normans in the north west France. As per information collected from Julius Caesar they lived in enclosed agrarian towns in a separate regions. Normally those who change their settlement frequently like refugees knows as nomads.

In 10th to 13th century Rollo of Normandy was the head of the vikings population. Later on his successor led the dynasty. With the passage of time vikings occupied a superior authority over other clan.

In etymology, The modern word Norman simply comes from words meaning 'Northman'

Explanation:

The viking settlers who settled in Northwest France came from the northern lands and were raiding those lands before eventually settling on them.

They were known as Normans in french language which itself derives from Latin Normand, or straight from old Norse.

These similar words have existed for the people and basically mean "North man" or someone who came to their land from the North.

The vikings retained the name to show their cultural heritage and origins.
