When the Spanish colonized the North American continent in the 16th century, they relied on the econmienda system. This labor system resulted in enslaved natives working on farms for Spanish land owners. In return for their service, the land owner would provide shelter and food for their workers. Along with this, the Spanish land owners would try to convert their natives to convert to Christianity.
