Many conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa resulted from the way the European colonists used imperialism to conquer territories. At this time, European states also engaged in what is now referred to as the "Scramble for Africa" where they met together in the Berlin Conference and decided how to split up Africa between the European states. Of course, the African people didn't have any say in this and many tribes and cultures were forced together or separated by these new divides. A lot of conflict arose from these new forced boundaries and European imperialist rule.

We cannot decipher their languages as easily as some may think. Over the past 3000 years, the human race has gone through probably a few thousand languages, but even if it was the same language all the way back to ancient times, the meanings of words & symbols change frequently.
Take the Swastika for example. This is an extreme change, but today in America, if you flaunt a Swastika, you're a racist.
