The Treaty of Versailles
Alika [10]

The Treaty of Versailles divided both Germany's land and military.

Germany was compelled to concede some of its lands to France and other portions of territory to Poland. Severe restrictions were placed on Germany's military after the Great War also. On top of that, Germany was forced to accept blame for causing the war and owed major financial reparations to the nations it fought against.

The reputation of the Harding administration: There were scandals and illegal activity that tarnished the administration.

One of those scandals was the Teapot Dome oil scandal. President Harding was not directly implicated in the scandal, but was affected by it. After Pres. Harding transferred supervision of the naval oil-reserve lands from the navy to the Department of the Interior in 1921, Secretary of the Interior Albert Bacon Fall secretly gave Harry Sinclair of the Mammoth Oil Company exclusive rights to the Teapot Dome reserves in Wyoming. He granted a similar deal to another oil company executive. The secret leases came under Congressional investigation. Congress directed President Harding to cancel the leases, and the Supreme Court ruled that Harding's transfer of authority to Interior Secretary Fall had been illegal. The whole affair took a toll on President Harding's health. He died in office in 1923.

Others came seeking personal freedom or relief from political and religious persecution. With hope for a brighter future, nearly 12 million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1870 and 1900. During the 1870s and 1880s, the vast majority of these people were from Germany, Ireland, and England--the principal sources of immigration before the Civil War. That would change drastically in the next three decades.
