The islands separate the Currituck Sound, the Albemarle Sound, and the Pamlico Sound of the Atlantic Ocean. The Colony of Roanoke was the first English colony in America. The colony was founded in 1587 by Sir Walter Raleigh but became a legend when the 117 settlers mysteriously disappeared. The play The Lost Colony was written to commemorate the history of the settlers and remains a very important part of the culture of the External Banks. Because of the very dangerous currents and the high number of shipwrecks that have occurred there, the Outer Banks are also known as the Atlantic Cemetery. The Atlantic Cemetery Museum is located in Hatteras Village.
