For St. Thomas Aquinas, the word animate beings mean the living beings. A<span>nimate beings continue their very existence through self-preservation, or by reproduction. The being relies on what is called the "Vegetative soul" which empowers its state. Without this soul, the animate being would non-existent and irrelevant.</span>
