Using your notes about loyalty in the first act of Julius Caesar, describe the character Antony as either a betrayer or a patriot. Your opinion of this character may change as you analyze the other acts, but your response to this question should focus on Act I only. Antony is extremely loyal to Caesar, but betrays Brutus and the conspirators. He claims that he only wants to speak to plebians to mourn and respect his death; he tells Brutus he will not blame the conspirators for his death. However, through the use of Shakespeare’s rhetoric, Antony is able to convince the plebians that Caesar was wronged. He tells them that if he was a bad leader and selfish, he would not have rejected his crown three times. He also talks about his will, which offers his subjects a lot of his own things.
