In this opening statement of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson states that there are certain obvious truths. He says that everyone is equal, and that everyone has rights given to them by their Creator. These inalienable rights are: "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." In order to have liberty and be happy, Jefferson is saying that the colonies must be free of British rule
