When the gold rush technically ended, people had the choice to either settle where they have been for a long time, now, or head back to where they had come. Maybe they settled in the middle of where they are and where they were because it was such a tiring journey that they weren't willing to make. However, knowing that they had gone to the West and expanded a little, it would strike their interest and fascination even more to the point where they may want to expand even more than they had wanted to before.
