The invention of these two new forms of transport transformed the lives of those who used them to travel and send goods by allowing them to travel quickly and efficiently throughout the country.

Before the locomotive, the fastest way to travel by land was on horseback, an uncomfortable way of travelling that allowed to carry very little weight and that required frequent stops to rest. In contrast, steam trains travelled faster, were able to cover larger distances and could carry massive loads.
