He will need 17 inches of ribbon.

The diagonal splits the square into two right triangles.  We can then use the Pythagorean theorem to find the length of the diagonal (the hypotenuse of the triangle):

12² + 12² = x²
144 + 144 = x²
288 = x²

Take the square root of both sides:
√288 = √x²
16.97 = x
17≈x

bekas [8.4K]

Since TSQ and QSR are supplementary, they give 180 when summed. TSQ is 150, so QSR must be 30.

Therefore, you have

\tan(30)=\dfrac{\sin(30)}{\cos(30)}=\dfrac{\frac{1}{2}}{\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}} = \dfrac{1}{2}\cdot\dfrac{2}{\sqrt{3}}=\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{3}}=\dfrac{\sqrt{3}}{3}

Find two numbers that have the maximum possible product and a sum of 7
Musya8 [376]

Call these numbers x,y. Then x+y=7 or y=7-x.

We want to maximize their product,

f(x,y)=xy\implies f(x,7-x)=F(x)=7x-x^2

We could consider the derivative, but I think that's overkill. Instead, let's complete the square:

7x-x^2=-\left(x^2-7x+\dfrac{49}4\right)+\dfrac{49}4=\dfrac{49}4-\left(x-\dfrac72\right)^2

whose graph is a parabola opening downward with vertex at \left(\dfrac72,\dfrac{49}4\right), so that the maximum product is \dfrac{49}4.

Now if x=\dfrac72, it follows that y=7-\dfrac72=\dfrac72.
